Together with the City of Gothenburg and Elyseum Distans, Omniway is running a pilot that explores how a digital learning environment can support students in grades 6-9 who, for various reasons, are outside the classroom.
Digital teaching gives students with absences a new chance
Through this collaboration, students with long-term or problematic absence get a safer and more equal route back into learning. The City of Gothenburg has built distance teaching as targeted support via Elyseum Distans. Omniway provides the digital environment where teaching, communication and follow-up come together in one place.
The initiative was one of the first in the country when Gothenburg, together with Uppsala, launched it during the autumn term of 2025.
A clear structure to strengthen school attendance
The setup follows the Swedish school law's framework for distance teaching as targeted support. In Omniway, students are met with clear weekly structures and small milestones that make schoolwork more manageable.
To create a safe and functional learning environment for these students, three things are especially crucial:
- Clear structure in small steps – assignments grouped into modules, checklists and a clear visual overview reduce stress.
- Flexible communication – secure chat, audio and video feedback, and the option of both real-time lessons and recorded sessions.
- Follow-up and reassurance – traceable attendance and activity, formative assessments, and collaboration with student health services and guardians.
Better focus, higher attendance and more grades
In the short term it is often about regaining focus, joining lessons again, and starting to earn grades in some subjects. Long term, the goal is to strengthen the sense of belonging to the school and step by step return to the classroom.
Helping schools deliver more equal teaching
The collaboration shows that equality doesn't have to be tied to a physical classroom. When the framework, student health services and digital learning environment work together, more students can find a way back to school.
Tips for other schools that want to offer digital teaching
- Start with student health: do an assessment, set up an action plan and clear goals for progress.
- Clarify the chain of responsibility and admission between the home school, the receiving school, and the education provider.
- Choose a platform that provides structure, relationships, and follow-up – not just a folder for documents and a video link.
- Track attendance and progress without creating more administration.
- Plan for the return from the start, wherever possible.
The way forward – digital support complements the classroom
Digital learning environments will become a natural part of the Swedish school system. The experience from the City of Gothenburg shows, in a short time, that distance teaching as targeted support can be shaped and rolled out nationally. Omniway wants to inspire more schools and municipalities to try new paths.
